| Welcome to the Union Chapel United
Methodist Church web page. The picture above is a true rendition
of picturesque Union Chapel. We are located in rural Joppa,
Maryland. Welcome to our home on the Internet.
The origin of Union
Chapel Church is found in its name. Before any buildings existed
for worship in Harford County, Methodist societies met in the
homes of members. On January 30, 1821, Methodists, Quakers, and
Episcopalians met together to establish the Union Chapel - "free
for all denominations of Christians."
Seven trustees were
established to care for this house of worship, two each from the
Episcopal and Quaker denominations, and three from the Methodists
- Benjamin Richardson, Rhesa Norris, and Beale Howard Richardson.
It was further stipulated that when a vacancy would occur, the
person would be replaced by a representative from that same
denomination.
